In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning to the West. In reference to a potential decision by America or its allies in NATO to authorize Ukraine to use American-made long-range missiles to hit Russian Targets, Putin said:
Flight assignments for these missile systems can, in fact, only be entered by military personnel from NATO countries. Ukrainian servicemen cannot do this. And therefore, it is not a question of allowing the Ukrainian regime to strike Russia with these weapons or not. It is a question of making a decision whether NATO countries directly participate in the military conflict or not.
If this decision is made, it will mean nothing less than the direct participation of NATO countries, the United States, and European countries, in the war in Ukraine.
Although American officials have denied the claim that they must be directly involved in target assignments, Putin has not walked back his position.
So I was surprised to read this morning that President Joe Biden has now done exactly this: authorized the use of American long-range missiles by Ukraine, to strike targets inside Russia’s borders.
