I’m just popping in to drop a quick note here: it’s highly unlikely that there will be a Friday Update today.
As I mentioned last week, if subscriptions here don’t pick up significantly, I have to grab a paying job. I’m all out of buffer. Bills have to be paid. And more importantly, children have to be fed. Running out of grocery budget before the end of the month sucks, but that’s where I am.
Since the Friday Roundup is an all-day writing project most weeks, I just don’t think I can squeeze it in this time.
Last night, I started DoorDashing, because it’s flexible, pays as well as grabbing a job most places that aren’t on a career track, and allows me to have time to myself to think, listen to audiobooks and podcasts, and so on. I’ve been doing it all morning again today, and only took a break to come home and eat and give my wife a ride over to our other business (which is growing, but not quite making ends meet yet).
Frankly, I’m finding that this kind of work is a nice compliment to writing. It gets me up and moving way more than being planted at my desk, puts me in interesting environments, and is very fast paced (which is a change of pace from slow, ponderous writing). It feels a bit like playing a video game in real life, which makes it kind of fun. (It’s going to be a lot less fun when summer really arrives and it’s 115 degrees every day, but I’ll jump off that bridge when I come to it.)
In any case, writing is still my calling, and I’m not going to stop. But I’ve got to find a way to re-work my writing schedule to accommodate this job that leaves no room for it during business hours. This Substack won’t be neglected if I can help it, I just have to feng shui my time differently.
That said, if you want to incentivize me to have my butt in my seat at the desk, please subscribe. It’s only $5 a month, and I’m confident you’ll get more than that much value. You can subscribe right here:
You can also buy me a coffee, or act as a patron of my work by donating to my Paypal.
For now, I need to get back in the car and make sure I don’t miss the lunch rush. See you soon. And thank you for your understanding!
Congratulations on the new employment. Looking forward to your further thoughts on this vs traditional desk job.
