I will admit that, on this subject, I am skeptical but open. I think it would be very cool to meet another civilization. Many people seem to have encounters with these phenomena. But the skeptic in me always wonders why all we ever get are a bunch of grainy images. People have 8K phones on them at all times, but we get videos that look like they came from a 1980s bank security camera. I don’t know, it doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.

I agree this report is important. Acknowledging that there are things happening out there that we cannot explain is a big deal, especially for an organization (the military) whose job it is to keep us all safe. That the military is concerned that these represent possible security threats is also understandable. Again, it is their job to think about such things.

But I also think there are some important caveats here. The government, particularly the military, routinely keeps secrets from itself. I would be very unsurprised if some of these sightings were of very classified military craft. Many scientists who have worked at national labs have said that the kind of technology they encountered there is basically science fiction. I suspect that more of these can be attributed to secret programs than the government is willing to let on. The military knowns the value of a secret.

There are also a shocking number of unexplained basic natural phenomena, such as ball lighting, that could eventually come to explain some of these.

As you say, time will tell.
